in between worlds

the moisture of the stifling air
so hot on my neck
it reminds me of a lover’s breath

the subtlety of the breeze
and the spider’s silky web
what is she trying to tell me,
in her intricate design?

the precious few words you uttered
before you slipped away to dreams
your mumbled reply in between worlds
broke my heart a little.

sometimes i feel i might burn out-
so much loveliness, so much ache

i watched the starshine through the window
and knew
in their death was the brightest of light.
