Inner child work has been an important theme for me recently. As the spring ushers in, I find myself reflecting on children, growth, and belief systems. I am becoming aware of how much our ideas about ourselves and life in general are formed wayyyy before we have any maturity or idea what is going on in the world! This creates a framework, like a computer program running in the background of our psyche, which tells us subconsciously how we feel, what is safe, who we are. In most cases these ideas, beliefs, and programming are completely outdated and based on traumatic events from childhood (even in small ways, like being teased in elementary school at recess). A large part of our ideas of worthiness, safety, risk taking, relationships to men/women/peers, come from these times. That is the reason it is so important to work with our inner child, look at the beliefs, look at the experiences from our now older and wiser perspective, and soothe and re-parent that child into feeling safe and loved.
Here is a video I made on the topic with more thoughts and how I have been doing inner child work:
and here are some tarot and journaling prompts you can use to connect to yours as well!
It is of the utmost importance to treat your inner child with understanding, respect, and nurturing. Give them (yourself) the freedom to fully express their (your) pain, emotions, fears, irrationalities. Expressing these through art, or writing letters, or making private videos are all great ways to give a much needed outlet.
and have FUN!! Above all children have the innate gifts of spontaneity, innocence, trust, and joy in the moment. Throughout the healing process don't forget to tap into this aspect of yourself that is still alive and well today!
Sending you much love, giggles, and adventures!
