If you know me, you know how I love a good independent tarot deck! They are often unique, fresh, personal journeys into the wonderful world of symbolism that the tarot holds. They offer the artists and creators a platform to express their individual associations and experiences with the tarot. This sweet deck is no exception! Created by artist Gretchen Diehl, The BirdQueen Tarot is a delight to work with.
One thing I love about this deck is that it is entirely nature based! There is not a human to be found and that in itself lends a very earthy and grounded approach to interpreting the cards. The suits and major arcana are all the same as traditional tarot, with the exception of the swords suit being changed to keys. Also, the pages and knights are now princesses and princes.
The borders have different colors depending on suit, and the suits are represented by: fish for cups, birds for keys (swords), insects for wands, and plants/flowers for pentacles. The author states that her goal was to make the meanings easily accessible and understood, and I feel that she did a good job with this. In my opinion, some knowledge of the tarot and card meanings is necessary to fully interpret traditional meanings, however it is also a deck that lends itself to intuition.
As always, when I got the deck, I did my typical deck interview. I loved the answers I got!
Q: BirdQueen, how do you see me?
A: The Chariot - On a mission to fulfill your dreams, integrating and embracing all aspects of yourself, both light and darkness. (Also, the Chariot is one of my birth cards, so that's appropriate!)
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: The Moon - The LWB that came with the deck describes it's take on the moon very well! "I represent everything wild and imaginative. I will help you get in touch with your feminine side, as well as the parts of you that are constantly dreaming. I will help you access your instincts."
Q: What are your strengths?
A: 5 of Cups - I will gently help you to face the realities of life in a way that you can understand easily, as well as helping you embrace the natural cycles of life.
Q: What are your limits?
A: 3 of Cups - I may not be for everyone, and that's okay! I stand out from the crowd.
Q: How can we best work together?
A: The Hierophant - Step outside of your comfort zone with traditional and rigid tarot meanings when you use me. Look to nature's wisdom and symbolism, and most of all your intuition.
Q: What will be the outcome of our work together?
A: The Hanged Man - I will help you gain a fresh perspective on the tarot, adding to your wisdom and experience and providing the opportunity for lots of new revelations!
Overall I really enjoy this deck and think it is a very soft yet realistic and truthful depiction of tarot. I think it will be amazing for anyone who loves nature and animals, who wants a gentler deck without harsh imagery, and for children or those sensitive/fearful of tarot. I am happy to have it as part of my collection!!
